Other Training delivered

Apart from the training mentioned before, training was also  delivered on a continuous base to the individual market traders on a one-to-one bases on site at the different stands as well as in the market office for small groups, reaching from 2 to 6 persons. Groups were approached according to the kind of trade they are in. Experience showed that most successful trainings are of a technical nature and based on the continuous follow up and delivery of business advice .

Other training :

Leadership and institutional training of market operators and committees. Better-trained market operators and committees, improved means of communication and contributed to an increased level of communication between the stakeholders. (see Task of the Market Management).

Training of small-scale entrepreneurs through specifically adapted workshops. This included business management training as well as technical skills training carried out in compliance with already existing training programmes in the region. The training content was as follows: introduction to business management, buying, costing and pricing, stock control, record keeping, packaging, customer care, marketing and the graduation process towards medium scale business.

Other technical training included: key-making, horticultural, hairdressing, fence-making and milling*. 

*The main objective of the Milling workshop training was to enable the Sauyemwa Open Market (SOM) manager and committee members to run a service mill in the most autonomous and sustainable way, contributing to the viability of the Open Market.   (Day-to-day running of the activity requires proper knowledge in operating  and maintaining the hammermill, as well as basic skills in management).

Capacity building :

Tasks of the Market Management  :

 

  • allocation of stands – social events and contracts

  • income – banking, determine market fee structure considering socio-economic and economic conditions and consulting with Market Committees

  • hygiene – monitor cleanliness of vendors and products, provide cleaning material and call health inspector
  • safety – guards, disputes, ensure intact environment

  • maintenance – breakage, functioning of facilities, office, market committee

  • Human Resource – cleaners, security, operators

  • upgrade – space, services, infrastructure, financial systems, internal organisation e.g. office and facilities

  • public relations – vendors, buyers, community leaders, media (together with the PRO of the Rundu Town Council) posters, memorabilia.
  • finances – cash-book and reporting to the Rundu Town Treasurer

  • relationships – stakeholders e.g. market, police, public, neighbours, businesses, conflicts about stand allocation and be neutral
  • conflict resolution- between traders and local authorities, custom officers, vicious competition between illegal and "legal traders" 
  • inventory – monthly inventories and reporting
